This message is to advise you of an impending change in the way you and
your customers will obtain class B and class C IP addresses, effective
July 1, 1992.
The HP Network Administration Office (NAO), which has been responsible
for allocating IP addresses to the field and HP customers worldwide, is
closing and will no longer provide this service. Recent factory
reprioritizations and reorganizations necessitate this change in
responsibility. With proper planning, the effects of this change are
expected to be minimal to you and your customers.
A recent survey of you and your peers indicates that most of you
currently acquire IP addresses for customers as part of consulting
activities and therefore charge for this service. In addition, the survey
results show that almost all NAO IP address requests were for a specific
number of IP addresses and that the field is able to make this assessment
themselves for HP customers without the NAO's help. A majority of the
survey responses stated that assisting customers with acquiring IP addresses
from Government Systems, Incorporated (GSI) could be a chargeable service.
Given the survey results, we believe that this change in acquiring IP
addresses will minimally effect the way you currently handle customer IP
address needs.
Effective July 1, your customers must obtain IP addresses directly from
Government Systems, Incorporated (GSI), formerly known as the Network
Information Center (NIC). GSI is the official assignment office for all
Arpanet IP addresses. Obtaining IP addresses from GSI will involve
additional paperwork and planning. Allow at least eight working days for
GSI to process an IP address request. Note - By July 1, the NAO will
properly register with GSI all customers who have previously obtained their
IP addresses from the NAO. No action is required from you or these
customers.
The new process for obtaining IP addresses is to fill out and submit an
application form from GSI. You can get this form by either sending an
e-mail message to service@nic.ddn.mil with a subject of:
netinfo internet-number-template.txt
or by writing GSI at the following address.
